What the rain wants you to do

to create a cooler world.

A major objective of Louisville’s Sustainability Action Plan is to “reduce core community greenhouse gas emissions annually below the 2016 baseline through 2030.”

What can you do?

Make some small changes that add up:

  • Turn off the lights when you aren’t using them.  You’ll save on your energy bills, too.

  • Use LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs.  They use less energy and last longer.

  • Turn down your heat – overall, when you’re asleep, or when you’re away.  A programmable thermostat can help.

  • Turn down your water heater to 120 degrees.  That’s safer for everyone anyway.

  • Shop local.  Eat local.  Shipping takes energy.

  • If you order from Amazon, use their Amazon Day Delivery function that results in one weekly delivery.  Ahh, less traffic, too.

  • Wash your clothes on the cold setting and hang your laundry outside to dry if possible.  Sunshine is free and your laundry will smell great.

  • Reduce, reuse, recycle.  Shop secondhand to save cash and keep things out of the landfill.

  • Plant a tree.  Louisville should be grassland, but we need our urban forest to offset the heat island effects of asphalt and concrete and take up more carbon dioxide.

  • Have more plant-based meals.  Raising livestock requires (and creates) lots of greenhouse gases.

  • Bike or walk instead of driving when you can.  You’ll be making a healthier you, too!

Help change the big picture, too:

  • Support organizations that work toward a sustainable future.  The Earth needs some lobbyists, too.

  • Can you switch to renewable energy sources?  Consider installing solar panels, enrolling in WindSource, or making your next vehicle electric.  (EnergySmart can also help you take advantage of incentives and rebates!)

  • Hold your elected officials accountable.  Let them know you expect them to act to solve climate change.  Ask how candidates plan to address the climate crisis, and campaign and vote for those with real answers and track records.

  • Hold the media accountable.  So much of American society has ties to the fossil fuels industry, including many media outlets.  Push back when their coverage doesn’t reflect the science (which overwhelmingly agrees that we need urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions now!) and instead follow reporters who do.

  • Talk with others about your values, concerns, and belief that we can make a difference.  What kind of world do you want your children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren to inherit?  What about Colorado’s animals that are adapted to cold, like pikas, lynx, and cutthroat trout?  Are you tired of breathing in wildfire smoke in summer, or waiting for snow during ski season?  We need everyone’s help to make lasting change.
